Strangers and night with no flavour whatsoever
Their words, they breathe on me
I look for a face and see Neanderthals
Smudging dreams and therapies

Notes from the Artist...

In a new series of getting behind the artwork, we speak to Daniel Jaems, the artist of A Short Life of A Neanderthal, his painting snapshot of an evening in a nightclub.

"Strangers and night with no flavour whatsoever
Their words, they breathe on me
I look for a face and see Neanderthals
Smudging dreams and therapies."

Daniel Jaems

"I wanted to create a Where's Waldo/Wally for the viewer, inviting you to explore the many aspects of this busy painting. The undercurrent is a coral-like sea of bodies all playing their part in an atmosphere that to a Covid mind, is almost forgotten. A tribal pilgrimage back to the beat of a drum.

Consider this art piece a life cycle. We all remember clubbing at one point right?
This piece is a study of a circle, anti-clockwise.
Young, Fresh and New in the lower-left corner, looking for their version of new.
A dark wall of ambiguity separating them from the experienced few.

We now want to record everything with our hands up in iPhone view.
To the mush of coming up and down, and the sweat of moving through.
Because that seems to be where all the action is at night.
Get through the right of passage, and things start to focusing again top right.

But currents are powerful things, they like to pluck static things.
Back into the mush and warmth after drinks.
It tries to spin us in reverse.
Back to dancing and popping things.

Back to the womb with hands in the air.
To a bright light where love’s aurora ignites.
Now we know why there’s a dark wall.
Against things that are so bright.
